Projects by Service – Ecology
Ecological Design | Lake Water Quality Assessment | Landscape Design | Aquatic Ecology
AWC were engaged by Logan City Council to redesign Riversdale Park Lake in Meadowbrook into a high profile urban lake. Various lake treatments were developed and prioritised into actions to be implemented over the next 3-5 years with the first stage of works completed in 2016.
Targeted ecological survey | Detailed reporting | Mapping
Stewart’s Farm comprises a significant parcel of farmland and coastal forest at Skennars Head, NSW. To supply additional information to the Joint Regional Planning Panel for the proposed rezoning of the land, AWC completed a detailed ecological assessment and constraints analysis.
Ecological survey | Contamination assessment | Statutory review
AWC assessed the poposed temporary access road to Upper Coopers Creek following a severe landslip in early 2013. Detailed ecological and contamination assessment of the proposed roadway was completed and a Review of Environmental Factors (REF) prepared for the project.
Terrestrial and aquatic flora identification | Understanding of likely construction impacts to aquatic environment | Local and State legislation
Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) engaged AWC to provide an environmental investigation report into the proposed pedestrian bridge construction over Lake Heron between the Galeen Drive Park and Honeyeater Drive Park at Burleigh Waters, lining two recreational parks on either side of Lake Hern.
Groundwater assessment | Ecological review | Modelling
The Cumbalum Urban Release Area (CURA) is a strategic rezoning to help provide for future housing needs within the Ballina Shire. Following preliminary site investigations by a number of consultants, AWC were commissioned to investigate post-development groundwater scenarios with regard to potential impacts on endangered ecological communities, threatened fauna habitat and the adjacent Ballina Nature Reserve in order to determine the efficiency of stormwater and WSUD proposals and review proposed mitgation measures.
Frog survey and monitoring | Water quality sampling | Reporting
The Burpengary AFL Precinct is being developed by Moreton Bay Regional Council, and AWC is providing ecological services for frog monitoring, frog habitat pond creation, and vegetation translocation and monitoring.
Flora and Fauna Survey | Acid Frog Survey | Reporting | Statutory assessment and compliance
The Tintenbar Sand Quarry requires an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for the proposed construction of a new quarry pit. The Director-Generals Requirements (DGRs) require a detailed ecological assessment inclusive of reporting and mapping to identify areas of conservation significance and determine compliance and mitigation with relevant legislation.
Fauna survey | Reporting | Data analysis
AWC have completed fauna survey and reporting for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Bluesfest events at Tyagarah, NSW to identify potential impacts on fauna habitat in order to fulfil requirements of consent
Flora and fauna identification | Legislative review | Soil assessments and erosion control
Gold Coast City Council commissioned AWC to complete an Environmental Investigation Report (EIR) for the replacement of the Guanaba Creek Road Bridge at Maudsland. The project requires the removal and replacement of the existing single lane bridge with a double lane bridge and re-alignment of the road approaches associated with the new bridge site.
Wetland remediation | Acid Sulfate Soil | Estuary and Coastal Management
Karragarra Island Wetland is a coastal estuarine wetland complex currently in a degraded state due to changes in land use over a number of years. Redland City Council engaged AWC to investigate the causes of wetland degradation and make recommendations for improvements.
AWC have been awarded the Nerang River Estuary Ecosystem Health Study. The purpose of the Nerang Estuary Ecosystem Health Study is to accurately assess the health of the estuary and provide Gold Coast City Council with a strategy for managing the Nerang River Estuary.
Catchment pollutant modelling | Riparian assessment | Aquatic fauna surveys | Community consultation
AWC were engaged by Gold Coast City Council to complete the Coolangatta Creek Catchment Management Plan. The Plan will provide an updated management tool that will enable GCCC, government agencies and stakeholders to take a co-ordinated approach to the protection and management of Coolangatta Creek.
Knowledge of major road infrastructure projects | Understanding of potential environmental impacts
An Environmental Management Plan (EMP) was prepared by AWC (on behalf of Australian Wetlands Pty Ltd) for the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) specific to the upgrade of the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Curra.
Soil testing | Aquatic weed management | Contaminated soil
Waterbird Park is an urban parkland located at Explorers Way, Carrara. The park has a constructed wetland comprised of two sections, with dense infestations of Mexican waterlily. Due to the poor performance of the wetland and the difficulty in eradicating Mexican waterlily, Gold Coast City Council proposed the re-design of the system to increase performance and aesthetics of the watercourse.
Flora and fauna identification | Legislative knowledge | Stakeholder liaison and communication
AWC was commissioned by Gold Coast City Council to prepare an ecological assessment of the Helensvale Waste Transfer Station at Lot 998 RP162673 and Lot 901 CP901660.
The objectives of the assessment were to determine the conservation values of the vegetation/habitat present at the site and identify the presence or potential for any flora or fauna species listed in the Nature Conservation Act 1992 to occur.
Seagrass and Mangrove Transplanting
As specialists in the creation and management of aquatic ecosystem, Australian Wetlands were engaged to construct, establish and maintain a mangrove wetland system in the large-scale redevelopment of the Southport Broadwater parklands on the Gold Coast.
Flora and fauna identification | Legislative knowledge | Stakeholder liasion/communication
AWC was commissioned to undertake a full ecological assessment of the Tipplers Hub Precinct located on South Stradbroke Islands, Queensland. The ecological assessment enabled Council to develop two Material Change of Use (MCU) applications for Tipplers Hub, which will ensure the area can sustain current and future visitation while maintaining the social and environmental values of the area.
Recent floods across the Burnett-Mary region have resulted in wide-spread riparian erosion and stream bank degradation. The Burnett Mary Region Group (BMRG) acquired funds from the federal government to rectify a number of sites across the region. AWC undertook a rapid riparian restoration assessment, concept retification designs and costings for all 13 sites.

Purpose: To utilise joint funding from Byron Shire Council and NSW Fisheries for improvement works within the Brunswick Estuary.
Wetland Design and Relocation | Construction Methodology
AWC worked within developmental parameters to provide a method and detailed woks for the translocation and careful re-creation of the existing wetland to a new site. This was done by considering soil characteristics, hydrology and physical topography of the wetland.
