On 20 October, the North Coast Regional Landcare Network’s (NCRLN) Caring for Catchments (CfC) project hosted a panel event exploring the question: ‘How do nature-based solutions contribute to flood resilience?’

Community members from a wide range of backgrounds came together to examine how restoring waterways and strengthening climate resilience can be achieved through nature-based solutions (NBS). With insights from both international and local speakers, the discussion offered a refreshing and productive look at what NBS can mean for the Northern Rivers region.

The event was facilitated by speaker, broadcaster and storyteller Mel Bampton. Five panellists joined her in conversation, including our Senior Scientist, Katrina Curran.

Katrina highlighted the long-term value of NBS, noting: “Typically the life cycle of a stormwater or wastewater treatment asset is 20-25 years… the life cycle of a nature-based solution extends well beyond that time frame.”

As the North Coast Regional Landcare explains, nature-based solutions enhance flood resilience, water quality, biodiversity, cultural connection to Country and community wellbeing. Deep-rooted vegetation and wetland systems which are often overlooked, play a crucial role in stormwater management and biodiversity improvement.

Thank you to the organisers and to all the participants, we are incredibly grateful Katrina was able to be a part of the Richmond Riverkeeper Riverfest 2025.
