Sandhills Wetlands Grand Opening, Byron Bay

Byron Shire Council has officially opened the Sandhills Wetlands reserve located to the Byron Bay CBD outskirts.

After extensive sand mining in the 1960’s, the area had since been disused and remained a derelict site. The Sandhills Wetlands project encompassed several objectives including biodiversity improvements, and the creation of a community open space. Stormwater management was also key, and is expected to improve water quality at the local beaches.

The project included stakeholder engagement and community consultation, including consultation with the local Arakwal People.

Australian Wetlands Consulting was the lead consultant on the project. We approached the project through an integrative management strategy, blending ecology, water management and landscape architecture. A special mention is needed for Katrina Curran who worked tirelessly throughout the project lifecycle.
