Belongil Creek Estuary Monitoring
Fire Access and Fire Trail Upgrade | Review of Environmental Factors | Ecological Assessment Plan | Design Documentation
Overview
AWC has been monitoring the estuary, storm water quality and nearby wetland vegetation at Belongil Estuary since 2008. The estuary is an ICOLL and requires artificial opening by Byron Shire Council when flood levels reach a predefined level and under licence from the NSW Department of Lands.
The project involved scaling up monitoring of these opening events to include 5 sites over 7 days post opening. Conductivity, water level and in situ water quality loggers were installed within the catchment to better understand the mechanisms behind the ‘need’ to artificially open the sand barrier between the estuary and the ocean.
