Southport Parklands Redevelopment
Seagrass and Mangrove Transplanting
Purpose
2008 saw the commencement of large-scale redevelopment of the Southport Broadwater parklands on the Gold Coast, a project jointly funded by Gold Coast City Council (GCCC) and the QLD state government, and with Abigroup as the chosen construction contractor.
As specialists in the creation and management of aquatic ecosystem, Australian Wetlands Consulting were engaged to construct, establish and maintain a mangrove wetland system—one of only a few such sites in Australia.
The mangrove wetland will provide a number of long-term benefits to the city including:
- Management of Stormwater Pollution
- Creation of fish habitat
- Protection and creation of an endangered ecosystem
Objectives
- In all some 10,000 mangrove seedlings were transplanted and established, requiring specialist understanding of the growing requirements of these niche species.
Partners & Stakeholders

- Gold Coast City Council
Outcomes
- A long-term monitoring and evaluation program, to be undertaken in partnership with Griffith University will also be delivered as part of the project.
